These hormones contain iodine, which is essential for proper functioning.

The function of the thyroid is regulated by the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. The hypothalamus produces thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), which travels to the pituitary gland and from there to the thyroid. When the levels of thyroid hormones decrease, the TSH level rises, stimulating the thyroid’s hormone production. Conversely, if the levels of thyroid hormones are high, the TSH level decreases, inhibiting the production of these hormones.

Doctors offer various treatment options that vary depending on the type and severity of the disease. For hypothyroidism, hormone replacement therapy is the most common, while for hyperthyroidism, medication, radioactive iodine therapy, or surgical intervention may be considered.
